History of Taylorsville, Utah

In November of 1848, a log cabin was constructed on the west side of the Jordan River by the first Mormon settlers. Several other families soon joined and together they founded the Taylorsville-Bennion areas originally referred to as "Over Jordan." In 1860, the Taylorsville area was called Harker's Settlement and already had a population of 178. John Taylor was the LDS Church president. His association with the town could be the reason for the name, Taylorsville. Through most of the 19th century, the Taylorsville area increased in population and size as the establishment of a schoolhouse, a post office, churches, canals and other structures occurred. The emphasis of Utah's first Compulsory Education Law in 1890 was to bring children off the farmers' fields and into school. It wasn't until 1904 when 22 of the local schools combined into the Granite School District. Shortly afterwards there was a need for a ‘modern' school and the establishment of compulsory tax-supported public schools throughout Utah started to occur. In the early 20th century, Taylorsville became home to two railroads and two new canals. By the 1980s-1990s the Taylorsville, Bennion, and Kearns area experienced rapid growth and development. Residents in this area were unsatisfied with the Salt Lake County Commission because it allowed the rapid growth, especially apartment complexes. Citizens joined together to develop a vision for greater local control of community planning, economic development and municipal service delivery. This organized effort is what enabled the incorporation of the City of Taylorsville on July 1, 1996.
